Grapes

This picture is loosely based on a painting (Plate of Grapes) by Juan de Zurbaran (son of Francisco). It cost me a lot of effort, both in modelling the optical properties of the grapes and in arranging them in three dimensions.

Grapes were a favourite of European still life painters. The surfaces of red, green or black grapes, whether glossy and reflective or dulled by a fine bloom, allowed painters to demonstrate their craft. But it was the representation of how light passes through the fruit that offered the greatest opportunity for sheer artistry.
