This picture is a fairly direct remodelling of a detail from a work (Still Life with Basket of Oranges) by the great Spanish painter, Francisco de Zurbaran.

Comparing Zurbaran’s lemons to my digital versions is really interesting. Zurbaran’s look infinitely better and more real, even though mine are arguably more realistic. This is a conundrum that continues to haunt my work in this medium and requires developing a distinct representational language that imitates neither painting nor photography.
